Semi Blows Tire, Triggers Crash that Killed Woman on I-90 in Ashtabula County
A woman was killed in a crash that set a semi truck on fire on Interstate 90 in Ashtabula County Sunday afternoon.
It happened in the westbound lanes near State Route 11 when a Volvo tractor trailer blew a left, front tire, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
It caused the semi driven by Vasil Pilipenko, of Webster, New York, to cross the median from the eastbound to the westbound lanes, where it hit a Chevrolet Colbalt and Kia Sorento. The semi then continued into a guardrail and burst into flames.
Pilipenko and a 13-year-old passenger were not hurt.
A passenger in the Chevrolet Colbalt - who has been identified as Lorrena Fish, 74, of Rock Creek, Ohio - was killed at the scene. The driver - Mary Tucker, 53 - and a four-year-old passenger were hurt and taken to area hospitals.
The driver of the Kia Sorento was not hurt.
The crash closed I-90 westbound at exit 228 for hours.
