Victims Identified in Deadly I-79 Accident Near Saegertown

The names of the two women who died in a violent, single-vehicle crash on Interstate 79 near Saegertown have been released.

Karen Davenport, 67, and Sharla Davenport, 48, both of Rochester, N.Y., died from multiple blunt force trauma, according to Crawford County Coroner Scott Schell on Monday.

The accident happened in the northbound lanes at mile marker 154 in Hayfield Township, Crawford County, south of Saegertown, around 4:16 p.m. Sunday.

The car, a 2007 Chrysler Aspen, was traveling north in the left lane, left the west side of the roadway and lost traction, according to investigators.  When the driver swerved back toward the east and on onto the interstate, the car began to roll, ejecting three passengers and then coming to rest on the east berm.

Coroner Schell said the two women killed in the accident were among those ejected from the car.  Three other people - a 68-year-old woman, an 18-year-old boy, and 16-year-old girl - were hurt in the accident and taken to UPMC Hamot in Erie for treatment. They are all from Rochester, N.Y.

One lane of Interstate 79 was closed for several hours as investigators examined the scene and collected evidence.  A tow truck was brought in to move the wreckage away.

State Police said the crash is under further investigation.
