Our area has plenty of wineries, breweries and distilleries.

But only one meadery, Ironstone Meadery on Tate Road.

Mead is an alcoholic beverage that has been around for centuries.

It has just three ingredients, honey, water and yeast.

Fermentation over time turns the mixture into mead.

Rich Konkol who owns the business with his wife Diana, takes his time making the mead, avoiding shortcuts that might cut quality.

He said, "I really push our quality. You notice it in each of the drinks, they are very smooth. No chemicals so they come right off the palate very nicely."

Mead has a unique taste.

Konkol said, "What we tell people is how do you describe a steak to someone who has never had a steak? You tell him to try it."

And since Ironstone opened in 2018, more and more people have tried the mead and liked what they tasted, enjoying the tasting room or taking a bottle or two home to enjoy.

The meadery now selling an average of 800-1,000 bottles each months.

All the mead produced and bottled in space inside the former Greene Township school, with Konkol coming up with a new flavor every week, mixing fruit, spices and other ingredients.
