Canvassing continues early Wednesday afternoon at the Erie County Courthouse.

About a dozen canvassers are removing ballots from their secrecy envelopes in preparation to be scanned for voting results.

Officials say they are very pleased at the number of mail in ballots they were able to get through Tuesday night. The goal was between 10,000 and 15,000; however, they were able to get through 22,000 by the end of the night.

8,000 more were prepared this morning under the watchful eye of poll watchers.

As of early Wednesday afternoon, 37,000 mail in ballots still need to be counted. Election workers resumed the process early Wednesday morning and will continue through 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Carl Anderson of the Erie County Board of Elections says good progress is being made.

Totals had been expected by Friday or Monday at the earliest, but Anderson says unofficial results may be available by end of day Thursday because of the quicker-than-expected process.
