Former Erie Insurance Employee Sentenced to Probation for Camera Found in Restroom

A former Erie Insurance employee who investigators said placed a camera in the restroom of the company's Gideon Ball House was sentenced to probation Friday.

Steven T. Erhartic, 45, of Fairview, will serve four years on probation for a misdemeanor count of possession of an instrument of crime, according to court records.

Erie Police filed the charges last February.

Investigators were called to the Gideon Ball House, which is located in the 100 block of E. Sixth St., Jan. 28, 2020, after a female employee found a Muvi camera in the unisex bathroom concealed underneath the sink, facing the toilet, according to the criminal complaint.

The camera contained five, half-hour videos of at least 14 people using the toilet between Jan. 27 and 28, investigators said. The first captured Erhartic installing and positioning the camera, which required him to remove an aesthetic plumbing cover with a screw driver to hide the camera, according to the complaint. The last video on Jan. 27 showed him removing the camera, and the first video from Jan. 28 showed him reinstalling and positioning the camera, according to police.

Erhartic admitted to placing the camera in the bathroom during an interview with police Jan. 29, investigators wrote in the complaint.

In an email, Erie Insurance said the person responsible for the camera, without mentioning Erhartic's name, is no longer an employee.

Erhartic's LinkedIn profile, which has since been removed, showed he worked as the portfolio manager for external investments at Erie Insurance Group.
