HARRISBURG, PA (WENY) -- Pennsylvania is one of several states in the Mid-Atlantic region now investigating a mysterious illness among songbirds, which in some cases is causing them to die.

Wildlife health experts, PA Game Commission and other agencies are urging the public to remove any feeders in an effort to curb the spread of the mysterious disease.

As of July 1st, 2021, officials say they've received more than 70 reports of the strange illness. It causes birds in various species (12 so far) to experience symptoms such as discharge and/or crusting around the eyes, eye lesions, and/or neurological signs like falling over or head tremors.

It's impacting wild birds both adult and young, and found so far among 12 species including Blue Jay, European Starling, Common Grackle, American Robin, Northern Cardinal, House Finch, House Sparrow, Eastern Bluebird, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Carolina Chickadee, and Carolina Wren.

In Pennsylvania, reports of these kinds of symptoms have been from 27 counties, and while none are in northwestern Pennsylvania, officials hope to stop the spread of the sickness while more testing is done to get to the source of the issue.
