Sonya Arrington No Longer in Federal Prison
Former Erie City Council president Sonya Arrington is no longer in federal prison.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons indicated she was not in custody as of Wednesday morning. Officials with the prison said Arrington is currently the responsibility of the Residential Reentry Management Office in Pittsburgh.
Arrington was originally set to be released July 8, 2022, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Her attorney Leonard Ambrose had requested she be released early due to COVID-19 and medical issues, but a judge had not made a ruling on that request.
The 55 year old reported to a federal prison in Alderson, West Virginia, Sept. 1, after a federal judge sentenced her to a year and a day in jail for defrauding the anti-violence charity she founded years ago.
Arrington took some $70,000 in donations to Mothers Against Teen Violence and spent it on herself, mostly on gambling at Presque Isle Downs and Casino, prosecutors said.
She also defrauded the Social Security Administration out of $30,000.
Alderson is a minimum security federal prison camp for female offenders.
Erie News Now reached out her attorney for additional details early Wednesday afternoon but has not heard back.
