State Police: U-Haul Involved in High-Speed Chase Used to Steal $17K in Items from Tractor Supply
The U-Haul vehicle involved in a high-speed chase in Erie County on Monday was used to steal more than $17,000 worth of items from Tractor Supply, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
Troopers started investigating the burglary Monday morning after learning multiple items were stolen from the fenced area behind the Tractor Supply on Downs Dr. in Summit Township overnight.
Three youth ATVs, a go-kart, trimmer mower, two mini-bikes and a Toro 54" zero-turn mower with a total value of $17,279 were stolen, and the vehicle believed to be used in the burglary was a U-Haul box truck, investigators said.
State Police said they were later able to determine the truck's location and responded there, but the truck took off at a high speed. Troopers tried to pull over the driver of the U-Haul, but it led to a pursuit covering about 20 miles and lasting 30 minutes, according to State Police.
The driver of the truck hit a State Police patrol vehicle during the pursuit, damaging the cruiser to the point it could not be driven, investigators said.
Troopers used a PIT maneuver to bring the chase to an end at E. 17th and McClelland Ave. in the City of Erie.
State Police said there were two people inside the U-Haul. The passenger - Michano Johnson, 33, of Waterford - was taken to UPMC Hamot for treatment. The driver - John Smith, 42, of Waterford - was arrested.
Investigators obtained search warrants for the U-Haul truck and a residence and found the items from the Tractor Supply burglary, as well as a stolen gun.
Smith was taken to the Erie County Prison on charges including fleeing and eluding police, persons not to possess a firearm, receiving stolen property, aggravated assault of law enforcement, recklessly endangering another person and numerous traffic violations.
Johnson faces charges for receiving stolen property and drug paraphernalia.
