A new three digit mental health crisis line will be released tomorrow, replacing the current 11 digit line and making it easier for people to reach out in case of a mental health crisis.

The Erie chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (or NAMI) hopes the new, easier to remember number will alleviate pressure from regular 911 calls, which may not be the best place to get help in the event of a mental health crisis.

"A lot of the times when people are in mental health crisis, [911] isn't set-up with a mental health professional," says Claire Lichtenwalter, Program Coordinator for NAMI. "So this 988 line is going to get you set-up with a mental health professional. So that way you get the proper help that you need because a lot of the times the police officers are involved when it might not be a police or an incarceration type of situation."

The line allows people seeking help to either call or text the new number, 988, which goes into effect tomorrow.
