Mardi Gras which is French for Fat Tuesday is underway, officially marking the start of Lent.

Bakeries through out the area made treats for those who look forward to this every year.

In preparation the TOPS on West 38th Street started baking the traditional king cakes last night.

TOPS typically sells 2,500 of these cakes through out the season. While tasty, the desserts still hold significance.

"It comes from a biblical term, when the three kings would take gifts to Jesus, so that's where they get the name king cake," said Dave Shean, Store Manager from TOPS Friendly Markets. "We cover all the holidays, it is fun, people look for these items."

Typically you'll find a small baby within your king cake. Symbolizing luck and prosperity to whoever finds it in their piece.
