Pennsylvania U.S. Senator John Fetterman said he cannot in good conscience support Speaker Kevin McCarthy's debt default plan due to the fact that it would push people into poverty.

Fetterman issued the following statement:

“Speaker McCarthy’s debt default plan would cut food assistance for nearly 40,000 people in Pennsylvania. This is just cruel.

“No one I’ve ever met wants to stay on SNAP for life. They need it to make ends meet. I sure didn’t come to Washington to take vital assistance away from working people at the same time big bank CEOs nearly crash the economy and get to jet off to Hawaii scot-free. I cannot in good conscience support a debt ceiling proposal that pushes people into poverty.

“We’re already addressing SNAP in a bipartisan way in the Farm Bill. But with default looming, jamming through harmful cuts to that program is reckless. It’s time to stop playing games and guarantee the full faith and credit of the United States.”
