Fireman Hit, Killed while Directing Traffic at Accident Scene Identified; Driver Charged with Homicide by Vehicle
The firefighter who was killed Sunday while directing traffic at an accident scene has been identified, and Pennsylvania State Police have charged the driver who they say sped into an accident investigation zone and fatally hit him.
The crash claimed the life of Shawn Giles, 53, who was a firefighter with Fuller Hose Company.
Dawann Simmons, 41, of Erie, is charged with homicide by vehicle, accidents involving death or injury while not licensed, driving while operator privileges suspended/revoked, driving without a license and reckless driving.
The initial two-car crash happened at the intersection of Route 20 and Brickyard Road around 12:47 p.m.
As police and first responders investigated that accident, firefighters were helping to slow and direct traffic around the scene.
According state police investigators, that's when Simmons traveling east at a high rate of speed plowed into the accident zone, hitting and fatally injuring Giles.
The crash sent Giles, who was wearing a flouresecent green shirt and holding a bright orange handheld flag, into the air about 15-20 feet before hitting the pavement, according to investigators.
A piece of the handle Giles had been using to control traffic was found on the driver-side floorboard of the Lexus which Simmons was driving, state police said.
Simmons was taken into custody and arrainged. His vehicle was heavily damaged in the impact.
No one was seriously hurt in the initial accident.
Route 20 near the crime scene at the intersection of Brickyard Rd. was closed as accident reconstruction experts processed the scene.
Simmons is being held on $200,000 bond in the Erie County Prison.
