90's Nostalgia: 2024 Calendar in sync with 1996
The 2024 calendar is an identical match to the 1996 calendar. The year started on a Monday, has 366 days and all the days correspond to each other.
Because of this, several viral videos have shown people conspiring about what trends from the 90's will make a comeback in 2024. We took the time to break dome some of the similarities we found between the two years.
Both years are presidential election years. Mercyhurst University Political Analyst Joe Morris tells Erie News Now that the 1996 election was one of the first times America has seen such a strong partisan divide. he says that a lot of what we saw in the 1996 election was setup by Newt Gingrich, a republican, becoming speaker of the house in 1994.
"The divide we have in the United States today is a little bit different. It's not necessarily along the same lines, but it's this idea that you can win in politics by tearing down the other side. That there's no limits on what can be said and how much you can degrade the other side. That's something we can trace back to the 1990's," said Morris.
Newt being elected was the first time in over 50 years that republicans controlled the house of representatives. Morris says that a republican controlled house at the same time of a democratic president contributed to a major divide of both parties.
Party Divide is a trend that was initiated in 1996 that we are continuing to see in the 2024 presidential race.
2024 music trends also seem to have 90's influences. HAPPI 927's Amy Sas broke down the Billboard top 100 songs of January in 1996 and 2024.
"In 996, people were done being sad," said Sas. The early 90's were all grungy, but people wanted to be happy again. You kind of see that with Mariah Carey's One Sweet Day. That was an anthem that made people feel good."
Erin Magorien, a fashion & merchandizing instructor at Mercyhurst University, tells us that many trends from the 90's will be popular again this year.
"Typically, fashion repeats itself every 30 years," said Magorien.
Magorien expects polo shirts, floral patterns, body suits, denim, and big oversized bags to be popular.
She says another popular trend that can be traced back to the 90's is monochromatic outfits, which means wearing one color in multiple different shades.
To complete the look, Magorien says some will grab the colorful blues and bright pinks in their makeup palate. Others with opt for no makeup at all for a grunge look.
