Our weekly series, Remembering our Veterans, continues with the story of a Greene Township man, born and raised on Brown Road.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army on September 20th, 1917, and five months later, he was a Private First Class with the 320th Battalion Machine Gunners, Company C.

Matt Husted, now 59 years old, is a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 285 in Waterford. He started researching his great uncle, George Allgier, years ago, and those efforts revealed some fascinating information.

"Being apart of something from that era, ya know the Great World War, to have letter from the post...it's tough to understand what they've endured," said Husted. "I knew my uncle growing up, I knew he was a great farmer and was always a gentlemen to speak to."

Matt's mother, Therese, now 87, also joined us for the conversation.

"He never spoke to me about the war, when they moved from the farm into town, I got the scrapbooks," said Therese.

George worked on the family farm in the 1960s and passed away in 1980. Farming was his way of life.

To great uncle George and the Husted family, thank you for his story and your service.
