The Erie Police Department is still accepting applications for those interested in becoming a police officer. The deadline to apply is June 30, 2024. 

Those interested in applying must meet the following requirements (all qualifications are set by the City of Erie Civil Service Commission): 

  • Be between the ages of 21 and 65.
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency
  • Be Act 120-certified at the time of hire
  • Pass the Northwest PA Regional Police Testing Consortium written and physical agility tests by date of hire
  • Agree to move within a 15-mile radius of the City of Erie Municipal Building, 626 State St. Erie, PA 16501
  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Have good moral character as determined by background check, psychological testing, and other reviews
  • Possess a current and valid driver’s license
  • Be free from convictions of disqualifying criminal offenses

According to the Erie Police Department's recruitment page, the starting salary in 2024 is $52,747. From there the salary will increase to $89,275 after 48 months.

The police department said they are committed to diversity. The department hired its first African-American Officer in 1904, along with Pennsylvania's first female officer who was hired in 1916.
