Over the past few weeks our area has seen a heartbreaking rise in the number of drownings, with two lives lost in Sugar Grove and Sheffield.

Experts we spoke with emphasize that these tragedies highlight the critical importance of water safety.

“The biggest safety tip that I would give is to wear your life jacket," stated Jeremy Rulander, Deputy Fire Chief for the City of Warren. "Not only is it the best safety device that you have on the water, but it’s also required by law if you are under twelve years old.”

Experts we spoke with stressed the importance of life jackets, as they are crucial for safety on the water, even if you are a strong swimmer.

They also stated the importance of taking care of yourself as the sun can also play a factor in your safety.

“You want to take plenty of water with you, and keep yourself hydrated," stated Piper VanOrd, Owner of Allegheny Outfitters. "A good hat is always a good thing to have with you too.  You should also reapply your sunscreen every so often."

When you plan to go out and enjoy water activities, authorized also emphasized the importance of letting someone know where you are going.

"It's important to have a plan in place before you get out on the water," added Rulander. "Let someone know where you are going and when you should be back."

Additionally, supervising children closely and never swimming alone are key measures to prevent drownings.

Community leaders are also encouraging residents to take water safety courses and ensure everyone in the family knows basic swimming skills.

Authorities remind everyone that while water activities can be enjoyable, safety must always come first.
