Preventing Litter On Presque Isle State Park

In honor of National Beach Day, the Department of Conservation and a non-profit organization are joining forces to help Presque Isles cleanliness.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful held a press conference at beach six this morning to discuss further action.
With more people being drawn to Presque Isle, the amount of litter has increased.

Before covid the park saw an annual visitor count of 4 million now numbers have risen to 5 million.
The parks operations manager Matt Greene says, " when we have more people there's more impact to natural resources and one of those impacts especially here at beach six and beach eight is litter."
Don Benczkowski explains "Little is not only departmental to the people and the aesthetic but it's very departmental to wildlife."

The press conference shared the park's plans and solutions to prevent littering from incoming visitors.
Don Benczkowski says, "Kiosks that have bags like a little bag drawer so if people are out here visiting and they didn't expect to stay out here and they didn't have anything to collect their litter in, now they do."
Not only are kiosk bags available at beach six and eight but now signs to prevent litter in four of the most commonly spoken languages in Erie
Matt Greene says, "We have a sizable immigrant population in Erie so making sure we can communicate with them with what the expectation is with litter and where to do and what resources are available them on their visit here."
