Celebrities Influence on Elections

There were lots of notable moments from Tuesday night's debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Jeff Bloodworth, a professor at Gannon University explained,  "This is the first debate I've seen of Trump in a Republican Primary or against a democrat that it's just hands down he lost."

But one of the most talked about moments happened after the debate, when Taylor swift endorsed Kamala Harris, but she's far from the first person to endorse a candidate.

As Chris Norris, the owner and strategist at Revox Media explained, "There's definitely been a history of celebrities, athletes, public figures, using a wider platform like broadcast television to endorse their political candidate."

Norris said more celebrities are using their platforms to get their messages across when it comes to politics or big issues, "I do believe more celebrities will use social media, yes, at the risk of getting backlash or opposing views but that's the world we live in."

Several other celebrities have shared who they will be voting in this election, including Elon Musk who plans to support Donald Trump.

Norris said these endorsements could have an effect on this election, "Whether it's Taylor Swift or Elon Musk, they have an enormous influence over people through platforms like social media, so yes, from a political stand point either one of their endorsements are certainly influential and could really change the landscape of this election."

Norris said that no matter who you vote for, what matters is that people are exercising their right to vote and it's important that more young people get out to vote.

Meantime, Dr. Bloodworth believes an endorsement is one thing, but getting out on the campaign trail is another.

"I've heard rumors from people in the know that has said she is super surrogate, it's what they call her and she is on a list of people they are going to send out to swing states. So if she shows up in person what it will do is bring people out", said Bloodworth.

Dr. Bloodworth said that Tuesday night was a data point in this campaign season, but more rallying and information from both sides will needed to secure that spot in the White House.
