Local Organizations Aim to Combat Homelessness in Jamestown

This July, Mayor Kimberly Ecklund declared a state of emergency in Jamestown, New York after estimating a homeless population of 300 people.

The Jamestown Business College has donated its facilities to the Saint Susan Center and the UCAN organization to help decrease the homeless population in the area.

David Conklin, the former president of the Jamestown Business College shares his reasoning for donating the buildings.

David Conklin said, "I've been with the college for over 30 years, and we have served the community for those years. When the Saint Susan Center came to us, we thought this was great. We are not going to be serving the community in the future, but the buildings will still be used for community service. One is Saint Susan Center which feeds the homeless and other people who have needs and UCAN which helps the homeless. It became obvious to me that the right and proper thing to do is not sell the buildings to them, but to donate them."

Cherie Rowland executive director of Saint Susan Center said, "We will be able to help each and every person to move forward and that's what UCAN and Saint Susan Center is all about, have a good life and to do well, they just need sometimes to have their handheld."
