Drop in Nighttime Temperatures Accelerates Fall Foliage Transition across Pa.

This week’s significant drop in nightly temperatures has accelerated the fall color transition in Pennsylvania, the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources said in its weekly fall foliage report.

Vibrant shades are now visible throughout the northeastern, northcentral, northwestern, central and southwestern regions of the Commonwealth. Bright autumn colors are widespread, stretching from the northern Poconos to the central Appalachians and across the Allegheny Plateau.

The district manager for Cornplanter State Forest District, which covers Erie, Crawford and Warren counties, said a stormfront last weekend brought down some leaves, but also introduced cooler night temperatures, promoting the development of fall colors in northwestern Pennsylvania.

Hickories are showcasing their warm golden hue, complemented by the crimson of black gum trees. Other notable contributors to the fall scenery include the orange and yellow mix of sugar maples and the dark russet and rich browns of oak trees.

With sunny days in the forecast, this weekend and the upcoming week offer great opportunities to visit your favorite state forest or state park to take in the abundant fall colors. Routes 6, 8, and 27 are popular scenic drives in the northwest, while Route 62 along the Allegheny River is always a reliable choice.

For a more scenic experience, consider venturing off the main routes to explore back roads, where you can enjoy Pennsylvania’s beautiful foliage and stop at local farmers markets to enhance your fall road trip in northwestern Pennsylvania.
