Kayakers Find Human Remains on King Island in Allegheny River

Investigators are working to identify human remains found on King Island in the Allegheny River, according to the Forest County coroner's office.

Kayakers who were apparently looking for a place to camp made the discovery Saturday, coroner Norman Wimer said. King Island is located about a mile south of a boat launch.

The remains, which are believed to have been there since the spring, were mostly skeletonized and are believed to be those of a man, according to the coroner.

There was no identification with the remains, and the cause and manner of death at this time is unknown, Wimer said.

A forensic pathologist in Erie will examine the remains to possibly determine the age, sex and other information. The coroner said he hopes there is enough DNA left to help identify the remains.

Wimer is working with state police in neighboring counties to see if there are missing persons and said he plans to use statewide and nationwide missing persons databases, if needed.

Anyone with information about a missing person is asked to call the Forest County coroner's office at 814-755-4580 or State Police.
