It was a beautiful day for some flag football and kids got to learn and play for free thanks to United Way.
The organization hosted their inaugural flag football tournament through a partnership with NFL Flag.
Kids got a chance to see what it would be life to play on Biletnikoff field with the inaugural event.
Anthony Easterling, the Middle School Athletic Director said, "It's a great opportunity for the schools to come together, compete, show great sportsmanship, have fun and meet new friends."
Games were held all through the day as kids got to learn both football and life skills and put them to the test as they competed against one another. Scot Galloway, a Community School Director at Perry Elementary School said, "They are learning sportsmanship, they are being physically active at their young age and they are also learning organized sports for the first time in their lives."
The event was free and all equipment was provided which meant more kids could participate. As Galloway explained, "We had this program as part of our after school programming. So for our families, organized sports may be a barrier for them due to a financial cost for them but right now all of the kids, so right now all of the kids are able to play with no charge to them."
This event was all about building teamwork and sportsmanship with children from different schools all through the city of Erie area. Saturday's event led to new friendships and maybe even some future careers in football.
As Easterling said, "But it's a safe environment for the kids to make mistakes, have fun and compete and get better."
Kids were competing for various trophies. Organizers were pleased with the turnout and support from both students and their parents.
