Erie City Council President Jasmine Flores is responding to backlash following a controversial post on her private Facebook page.

On Monday, October 28 the city council president posted the following message on Facebook:

"About 90% if not more of you red hat followers need to be honest with yourselves and acknowledge that WHITEHOOD you all own or were raised to own because of your SICK family history.

YOU ARE A RACIST and if your a person of color you need to stop hating yourself and find your roots because you are lost and your assimilation is showing and you are embarrassing the rest of us who have educated ourselves on the REAL AMERICANS HISTORY WITH ALL ITS BLOODSHED AND SLAUGHTER FOR BLACK AND BROWN PEOPLE!!

That redhat is the new whitehoods for the KKK and I want to be wrong but when people show you who they are you have to believe them!!"

Erie News Now spoke to Flores who responded to the backlash with the following statement:

"My views on my personal Facebook are allowed under freedom of speech 1st amendment rights. I am  half Puerto Rican and half Mexican and a women the red hats/trump supporters have been hateful and divisive to all people but white men and when they do it is is okay. I was informed the redhats is also a senior women group I did not know about so I have to be specific when I mention the redhats/ trump supporter from this point."
