Troopers: 11 Year Old Killed while Chimpmunk Hunting in Crawford County
An 11-year-old Amish child has died after being shot in the head while chimpmunk hunting in Crawford County, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
The incident was reported Saturday around 11:50 a.m. near Atlantic Rd. in East Fallowfield Township.
Three Amish juveniles were chimpmunk hunting with BB guns when one round was fired from the .22 caliber rifle of one of the children, investigators said.
The round missed the chimpmunk, but another round was fired as the chimpmunk advanced toward him, according to troopers.
After the final shot, one of the kids saw the child laying on the ground motionless and sought help from an adult Amish man who was working in the field, state police said.
The child was taken to UPMC Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment by medical helicopter.
A doctor reported the child's injuries were not survivable, according to investigators. The 11-year-old boy died from his injuries Sunday, troopers said.
