Erie County Executive Brenton Davis has issued a temporary countywide burn ban due to heightened fire risks due to current dry conditions, lack of precipitation and strong winds.
The burn ban aims to protect the health, safety and welfare of Erie County residents by limiting outdoor burning activities that could lead to uncontrollable fires.
The executive order follows recommendations from Erie County firefighting organizations, the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry, the district forester and more.
The burn ban will be in effect for 14 days. The burn ban may be extended if there is no resolution.
Open burning of materials such as garbage, leaves, grass, twigs, litter, and any land clearing debris is prohibited. This includes fire in burn barrels, fire rings or on open ground.
Permitted activities include:
Additionally, campfires in designated campgrounds are allowed if contained in fire rings, with flammable materials cleared within a 5-foot radius.
Local and state police will enforce the burn ban. Violators will face fines up to $100 for a first offense, $200 for a second offense, and $300 for subsequent violations.
