Women on Both Sides of Reproductive Rights Issue React to Trump Win

From a pro-life mom to a reproductive rights activist, we're getting very different reactions to former President Donald Trump's victory.

"I'm feeling very disappointed you know, upset a little confused, nervous about the future of the country, not just on this specific issue, but in a broad sense," said Chelcie Alcorn, who was a delegate to the democratic national convention last summer.  Alcorn along with other supporters of Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign had hoped she would restore abortion protections under Roe v Wade and veto any attempt at a national abortion ban.

While Karli Van Der Volgen, a board member of People for Life, was pleased with the former president's win. "We had to choose, you know, one or the other and they're polar opposites in many ways as far as women's reproductive rights, so this is a really good win for us and we're very happy about that," she said.

Karli, home schooling her three children supports life as a moral reflection of her faith.  She said her views on the matter are even more restrictive than those of Donald Trump.  She was bothered by campaign rhetoric and political ads that suggested Donald Trump would totally ban abortion. "He is in favor of certain exceptions for abortions, so it's simply untrue when they say he wants to ban abortion and you know he wants to be in your doctor's office with you, so I believe that's untrue," Van Der Volgen said.

While Chelcie Alcorn, a former employee of Planned Parenthood believes that pro-choice concerns about President-elect Trump are real. "I don't think it's exaggerated, hyperbolic what ever you want to say about it, to say that he is okay with a national abortion ban, okay with any number of restrictive anti-choice measures," Alcorn said.

Yet both say women with differing views on these reproductive issues should not vilify each other, but keep talking. "Letting people get an understanding of where you're coming from, why you feel the way you do, and then listening to the other person," Van Der Volgen said, "I mean that's how everything works -- calmly -- nobody wins anything through shouting, fighting and typing on their phone screen."

Alcorn agreed.  "I've had conversations with people who do not agree with me on this and it has...been a productive dialogue, so just having an open mind and making sure that you're coming with your facts straight and you're willing to listen to the other person, those are the two biggest thing you can do to have a good dialogue about this."
