On this Veterans Day, 93-year-old George Smilo is filled with appreciation.

"It's quite a surprise that somebody would do this for me," said Smilo. "Can't put it into words really."
Angelo's Roofing and Construction selected Smilo as the recipient of the fourth annual Roof a Vet event.

The company is providing Smilo with a brand new roof, at no cost.

"Our veterans show us through their actions how they feel and what they do for our great country," said Angelo's Roofing Owner Andy Vinca. "This is just a way to raise awareness and give back and say thank you for what they are doing for us."

In 1953, Smilo served as a combat infantry rifleman in the Korean War.

"It was hairy once in a while, but I don't resent being there," said Smilo. "I'm proud to have been there and I lost some friends, but that happens. Luckliy, I never got wounded."

Smilo says he is proud to have served his country.

"I'm American and I fought for my country," said Smilo. "That's what I fought for. That flag means everybody. The whole country."
