It's been nearly 20 years in operation for the Erie Blue Coats. The group is known for giving high-fives to students at Erie's Public Schools, creating relationships with them and holding signs that say "Nonviolence begins with me!" at community events.
Wednesday afternoon, the Blue Coats hosted an important luncheon to inform people about their nonviolence initiative.
"We need help," said Donald Heidelberg, director of Community Service Safety for the Blue Coats. "The community needs more of us."
Heidelberg, along with other appointed speakers, mentioned that the luncheon was an organized plea. They admitted that finances are tight right now and are asking for extra financial support.
"They're not [at schools] as police. They're there as friends and mentors," said Erie School Board member Linda Graff.
Cesar De Leon is one of the Blue Coats who shared how much this organization has impacted his life.
"Every day is new learning experience," De Leon said. "You see these kids grow and see them graduate and all. That's just the thrill of it."
The Blue Coats say they have seen a decrease in violence overall this school year.

They also ask people to address "Miss Linda Hancock" in the subject line.
