The historic Red Covered Bridge in Waterford has been reopened to traffic.

Located on Niemeyer Road over LeBoeuf Creek, the one lane structure has been closed since 2011.

It was restored with the bridge supports brought up to modern standards so it could reopen with a 15 ton weight limit.

The 85 foot single lane covered bridge was built in 1875 by brothers Charles and James Phelps, with a town Lattice Wooden Truss Design.

It is one of only 19 such bridges left in the state.

The bridge is owned and maintained by Waterford Township.

The cost of the bridge repair was a little over $3.4 million, and funded with a combination of state and federal money.
