Erie's Sikh Cultural Society Marks 555 Years of Faith

Erie's Sikh community has spent the weekend celebrating the 555th anniversary of their founder, Guru Nanak, who came from northern India.

At their temple on W. 8th St. the Gurdwara Sikh Cultural Society of Erie wrapped up three days of devotion and celebration on Sunday.

There was special music and food. Erie Mayor Joe Schember also joined the celebration.

Throughout the weekend, leaders of the faith recited all 1,430 pages of their book of teachings—teachings that focus on oneness, compassion, humility, and honesty.

Jay Kang said the founder also believed in equality and a God who is accessible to all, and that his teachings, 555 years later, are still relevant today.
