PA Supreme Court Upholds Law that Local Governments Can’t Pass Gun Mandates

This week, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court released a final ruling on gun control mandates in local governments.

All seven justices unanimously ruled that a state law prohibiting local governments from passing gun mandates is constitutional.

Gun violence prevention advocates had sued the state over the law several years ago. The legal question worked through appellate courts to be heard by the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

The judges confirmed that while gun control laws in the state might be unsatisfactory to some, the law prohibiting local controls to exceed state controls is within the legislature’s constitutional authority to pass.

In the wake of the ruling, lawmakers have commented online their commitment to keep working on this issue in the new session year in Harrisburg.
