Erie Fire Dept. Asks Residents to Clear Snow from Furnace Vents
Erie Fire Department is asking residents to check their high-efficiency furnace vent pipes for snow or ice blockages.
Blocked vents can lead to carbon monoxide buildup, furnace malfunctions and even emergency heating outages.
High-efficiency furnaces rely on exterior intake and exhaust pipes for proper operation. When these pipes become blocked by snow or ice, the furnace may shut down or operate inefficiently, increasing the risk of carbon monoxide exposure.
Fire department officials also shared the following tips to keep your home safe:
- Check vents regularly: Ensure intake and exhaust pipes are clear of snow, ice, and debris.
- Know the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning: Symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, and confusion. If you suspect CO poisoning, evacuate immediately and call 911.
- Install carbon monoxide detectors: Ensure your home is equipped with functioning CO detectors near sleeping areas.
- Call for professional help if needed: If you notice persistent issues with your furnace, contact a licensed HVAC technician.
