PennDOT to Impose Vehicle Restrictions on Interstates, Lowers Speed Limits
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has lowered the speed limit and imposed vehicle restrictions on the interstates in northwestern Pennsylvania.
The speed limit has been temporarily lowered to 45 mph on:
- I-90, entire length
- I-86, entire length
- I-79, north of I-80
The following vehicle restrictions are now in effect:
- Tier 2: Interstate 80 from the Ohio border to mile marker 173 (Lamar exit, Route 64).
- Prohibits certain vehicles including unloaded trucks, trailers, motorcycles, RVs, buses, and vehicles towing trailers.
- Tier 3: Entire lengths of Interstates 90 and 86. Interstate 79 north of Interstate 80.
- Allows only loaded single trailers with chains or Alternate Traction Devices (ATDs).
PennDOT said crews will pre-treat roads to prevent ice bonding, though icy spots may still occur, especially on bridges and ramps.
It is asking drivers to avoid unnecessary travel and to use caution when driving.
The department is offering the following advice:
- Slow down, use headlights, and avoid distractions.
- Maintain distance from other vehicles and snowplows.
- Avoid driving in whiteout conditions; safely exit the road if necessary.
- Prepare vehicles with essentials like food, water, blankets, and scrapers.
- Stay six car lengths behind plows.
- Do not pass or drive alongside plow trains.
- Use lights for visibility and comply with PA law requiring lights when wipers are active.
Drivers must clear snow/ice from their vehicles within 24 hours of a storm. Violations can result in fines of $50, or up to $1,500 if snow causes injury or death.
151 crashes with three fatalities occurred on snowy or icy roads due to aggressive driving. PennDOT asks drivers to prioritize safety to prevent similar incidents.
