The annual spelling bee at Beaty Warren Middle School showcased the spelling talents of 35 students, with five advancing to the district competition.

The event featured a panel of judges including Erie News Now’s own bureau reporter Jackie Palmer, Brian Hagberg from Your Daily Local, and Warren County School District Superintendent Gary Weber.

The first-place winner was fifth-grader Ava Briggs, who expressed excitement about representing her school at the district bee. "I'm super excited. I was nervous but my mom told me just to breathe, so I did and then I got it," said Briggs.

Eighth graders Joanna Bennett and Ava Wilson took second and third place, respectively. Bennett said, "It was fun, but I was a little nervous. I am going to have to study even harder for next time." Wilson added, "I’m very happy and I'm looking forward to the trip to Eisenhower."

Along with Briggs, Benett, and Wilson, seventh grader Ma'eve Miranda and sixth grader Gabrielle Bigelow will compete at the district spelling bee, which will be held on January 31, 2025, at Eisenhower Middle High School.
