Fire Safety Around the Holidays
As the holidays continue through New Year's, there are always concerns about issues that can cause fires or other problems around the house.
Lawrence Park Fire Chief Joe Crotty said around this time when family is over, meals are being cooked and candles are lit, you have to be extra careful around the house.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, the number of open-flame fires on Christmas Day is more than double the average with New Year's Day running a close second.
Holiday fire fatalities are nearly 70% higher than average, with property loss being 34% greater.
Crotty said along with using caution, there is one device that is key in fire prevention.
