Parents Discuss Screen Time in the New Year
Many people may choose to set New Year's Resolutions starting Wednesday. They can range from eating better, working out, our less time on the screen.
Children at the ExpERIEnce Children's Museum shared some of their New Year's resolutions. Natalia Pena said, "I'm looking forward to being with my family more and doing more goals." Her sister, Mariana Pena said, "Share more with my sister."
A resolution for many parents and maybe their children could be less screen time. Sylvia Posada said, "The easiest way is to give them a tablet, they have a day off of school, you give them a tablet, you give them the TV. But it's very important for them to use their imagination to be with other kids and improve their social skills."
Posada said she likes to take her children out to activities, like the Children's Museum where they can have fun and learn at the same time. Olivia Wickline, the Director of Marketing and Community Relations for the Experience Children's Museum said, "The entire museum is really steeped in play based learning."
Other parents said children learn from their surroundings, so if they aren't around screens, they won't be inclined to be on them. Fellow mother, Mandy Dyjack said, "If kids stay on the screens they are going to stay there as long as they want, but as parents it's our responsibility to provide them with as much of opportunities where they are out and socializing and they enjoy those just as much. It's just easier to be on those screens, so if we are proactive with it, that's what they are going to end up doing."
Events like Noon Year's Eve let's kids and their parents step away from screens and have use their imagination for a couple of hours.
