Christmas Morning Fire in Brocton Claims One Life, Cause Under Investigation
A Christmas morning fire in Brocton has left one man dead, and the cause remains under investigation by the Chautauqua County Fire Investigation Team.
At approximately 5:00AM on December 25, the Brocton Fire Department, along with mutual aid departments from Portland, West field, and Fredonia, responded to a structure fire at a home on Old Mill Road.
According to fire officials, the back of the house was fully engulfed when crews arrived on the scene.
Brocton Fire Chief Harry Pew described the response, saying, "When we arrived, the back of the house was fully engulfed in flames. Departments from Portland, Westfield, and Fredonia assisted us putting it out. There were 25 people or more out there doing their best." Despite the efforts of all departments involved, 32-year-old Zane Shattuck was found deceased inside the home by fire personnel.
The Chautauqua County Fire Investigation Team has determined that the fire began in the ceiling area of the basement. However, due to the significant damage caused by the fire, the exact cause remains difficult to pinpoint.
Officials were also unable to confirm if the home had working smoke detectors at the time of the fire.
Chautauqua County Emergency Services Management Director Noel Guttman emphasized the emotional toll the event took on first responders, many of whom are volunteer firefighters. "This was a tragic event, especially on Christmas Day. Many of these volunteers left their homes, their families, to try to help," Guttman said. "The mental and emotional impact of such events on our responders can be significant, but I commend them because despite all of that they keep coming back and wanting to help. They are true heroes."
Though the investigation continues, fire officials encourage residents to take basic safety precautions, especially during the colder months. Regular maintenance of heating equipment, electrical systems, and smoke alarms can help reduce fire risks.
"This is a tragic reminder to our community to make sure you have smoke detectors, make sure you have escape plans," stated James Quattrone, Chautauqua County Sheriff.
The National Fire Protection Association recommends installing smoke detectors on every level of the home, particularly near sleeping areas, and testing them monthly.
As the Chautauqua County Fire Investigation Team works to determine the cause of the fire, officials continue to stress the importance of fire safety in the home. For more information on fire prevention and safety tips, visit here.
