As the winter months approach, staying safe at home becomes a top priority. Checking the batteries in your smoke detectors is essential, but it’s easy to overlook.

"Smoke detectors are your first line of defense in the event of a fire," said Noel Guttman, Chautauqua County Emergency Management Director. "We cannot stress the importance of working and updated fire alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and basic fire extinguishers in every residence, whether you own a home or are renting, they are the fundamentals of safe living."

In addition to maintaining working smoke detectors, officials also emphasize the importance of having an evacuation plan in place. "An evacuation plan ensures that everyone knows what to do and where to go during an emergency," said James Quattrone, Chautauqua County Sheriff. "It can save time and keep you safe."

Chautauqua officials also urge homeowners to use proper heating sources and avoid misusing equipment. "Don't use outside heating equipment indoors. Misusing heating devices like a Salamander or something else folks use for camping or outdoor working environments can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning," warned Guttman. "Make sure you are following the instructions on the equipment and if you are using external heat sources, like a space heater, make sure they have a lot of room and aren't close to anything that could overheat or catch fire."

By following these simple steps, homeowners can help ensure their homes remain safe and warm throughout the winter season.
