As the snow continues to fall, we spoke with Director of Public Works, Jason Sayers, about the city's ordinance regarding sidewalk safety. He emphasized the importance of promptly clearing snow to protect pedestrians. "The city of Erie has an ordinance that requires residents and business owners to keep sidewalks clear of snow and ice, and we strongly encourage everyone to do so for safety," Sayers said.

The ordinance states that if not followed, residents in Erie could face a fine of up to $300. "It specifically states that sidewalks should be cleared of snow and ice within three hours after the snow stops falling," Sayers explained. "We understand that sometimes that can be challenging, but this is Erie, and we try to work with everyone as best as we can."

Jean Douglas, a lifelong Erie resident of over 50 years, shared how she and her neighbors dedicate up to 30 minutes each day to shoveling their sidewalks—not only for safety, but also to ensure mail carriers can do their jobs. "It takes us about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the snow, and we have to do it so the mailman can get through," she said.
