It's a changing of the guard for Erie City Council.

During its reorganization meeting, today, council members nominated councilman Mel Witherspoon to serve as Council President for 2025.

Witherspoon's third consecutive term with council ended in 2023, but he was appointed last January, to fill the seat that was vacated by former councilwoman Liz Allen.

Meanwhile, council member Tyler Titus was nominated to serve as Vice President of Council.

"It means a lot to me to be the president for this year and this will be, I'll say it public, this will be my last year on city council," said Witherspoon.

"It's just an honor to be able to serve. My colleagues and this city in this capacity. To have a unanimous vote putting both Mr. Witherspoon and myself up, I think speaks to both what we've been able to accomplish and what we hope to accomplish as well too," said Titus.

Witherspoon's seat will be on the May primary ballot for a four-year term.
