The former Executive Director for the Erie Humane Society could face trial for stealing more than $32,000 from the organization after she waived her right to a preliminary hearing Thursday.

Nicole Leone, 41, was charged in December with fraud, theft and records tampering. All three charges, which include two felonies, were allowed to proceed.

Investigators originally said Leone made a total of 139 unauthorized purchases with the non-profit's credit card, totaling more than $23,000. Erie News Now learned Thursday she is now accused of stealing more than previously reported with the total now exceeding $32,000.

Leone left the Humane Society in mid-November before the charges were filed. She led the shelter for nine years.

A bike purchase broke the case, according to investigators. Leone allegedly bought two instead of one for a shelter fundraiser. The second bike was reportedly spotted in a picture Leone posted on social media.

Her next court date has not yet been set.

The current Board President of the Erie Humane Society, Jennifer Gornall, provided the following statement regarding today's hearing:

“We are pleased with today’s outcome and are confident that the justice system will bring this matter to an appropriate conclusion. The Erie Humane Society staff and board continue to be focused on giving the pets in our shelter the best possible care, finding them loving forever homes, and providing a critical service that the community has relied on for the past 132 years.”
