For the first time in two years, our region is experiencing significant snowfall, and local snowmobilers are eager to hit the trails.

To help riders prepare for the season, the Mayville Department of Motor Vehicles in the state of New York is offering special hours for snowmobile registration.

“These extended hours are designed to make it easier for riders to get their paperwork in order and enjoy the trails safely,” stated Emily Blevins, Deputy County Clerk for Chautauqua County. "We are excited to offer this service to the community. The office will be open Saturday January 11th from 8:15AM until 11:45AM, offering residents and out-of-state residents over four hours to register their snowmobile or snowmobile related vehicle."

For out-of-state snowmobilers, the registration process requires them to provide proof of insurance and registration from their home state.  The Mayville DMV will then provide them a special sticker to apply to their current registration.

During the extended operation hours in Mayville, DMV representatives will be on hand to assist anyone in need but also state that many of the applications and papers can be filled out online and printed prior to visiting the office, in order to expedite the process.

Meanwhile, local snowmobile clubs are excited about the return of snowy conditions, which create ideal opportunities for riding.

“It's been two years since we've had this much snow," stated Bob Perry, President of Chautauqua Lake Snowmobile Club. "Everybody is really excited to get out on the trails. It's been a lot of work and man-power for us to get the trails up and running, but now that it's finally here we are excited for it."

"It's not just about riding," explained Julie King, President of Ellery Sno Cruisers. "It's about community involvement and what all of our snowmobile clubs can do to support all of the businesses in our community. We do a lot more than just ride."

While enthusiasm is high, law enforcement is reminding snowmobilers about the importance of safety. “We will have officers on patrol, watching out for everyone's safety," stated Chad Bargar, Lieutenant with the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office.  "Get registered, get insured and have a safe and enjoyable snowmobile season."

With plenty of snow and extended DMV hours, this season is shaping up to be one to remember for snowmobilers in the Mayville area.
