ELMIRA, New York - The first class arrived Friday at the new Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) at Elmira College.

The inaugural class of 120 medical students made their way to campus Friday morning.

Students had to wait outside before entering in socially distanced groups for the first day of classes.

The students quarantined for 14 days after arriving to campus and school officials say they're doing everything possible to provide a safe in-person experience.

"A bulk majority are coming in small groups of thirty," said Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. Richard Terry. "Our lecture halls - there is two - each seat 150, so were able to put 34 kids in each classroom and broadcast. And then we'll have an afternoon session, which will be identical to the morning session."

The new Elmira College is expected to have an economic impact of more than $60 million in the Southern Tier/Finger Lakes region of New York.
