During his tour of duty, Stephen Carroll saw plenty of life-threatening situations and he remembers a number of those close calls.

He told Erie News Now, "They had a Medevac Helicopter come in for some wounded soldiers and when the helicopter took off, it was shot out of the air and exploded. "

In retaliation to that attack, Carroll was injured during combat and needed treatment. He received a Purple Heart for his actions.

"I told the Medics, we have people hurt more than me, give them the medical attention."

His passion for his Country and the people he served with has never waivered.

"We learned more about the people we served with, than their families, they were an extension of your soul."

Now 78 years old, Carroll still serves as the Post Service Officer for the VFWW 2006 in Meadville.
