Funeral Details Announced as Fuller Hose Company Mourns First on Duty Firefighter Death in Department's 138-Year History
Fuller Hose Company is mourning the first on-duty firefighter death in the department's 138-year history.
Firefighter Shawn Giles, 53, was hit and killed by a driver while directing traffic at the scene of a crash in North East.
Giles was a 13-year veteran of the department.
Chris Skrekla, of Fuller Hose Company, on Tuesday called it the darkest day in the fire department's history. He thanked the community for its support and asked for time and privacy to grieve.
The funeral for Giles will be held on Friday at Gravel Pit Park. Calling hours will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 4 p.m.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro also ordered Commonwealth flags to fly at half-staff in honor of Giles.
The driver - Dawann Simmons - was quickly taken into custody at the scene and taken for blood testing. He faces charges including homicide by vehicle.
We learned Simmons was cited two days before the fatal crash by City of Erie Police for driving with a suspended license.
The fatal crash was captured on the camera of a Pennsylvania State Police patrol unit, which will be used in the investigation and for prosecution, according to Troop E commander Kirk Reese.
Reese also reminded drivers of Pennsylvania's Move Over law, which requires drivers to move into a non-adjacent lane and slow down when they approach emergency vehicles.
