As the boating season continues, so do the calls for water rescues on Lake Erie.

Lakeshore Towing Services responds to hundreds of water rescue calls a year. Lakeshore’s president Eric Guerrein said communication and location are the most important things. The Coast Guard requires boaters to have certain equipment on board. But Guerrein recommends bringing additional items like a marine radio and a GPS device.

He also recommends boaters check the weather on the water.

“A lot of people just check the land forecast and it might call for a sunny day,” he said.

“On the lake, the winds could be high and you could have large waves.”
