North Shenango Fire Department Volunteer Struck by Vehicle While Conducting Traffic Control
The Conneaut Lake Police Department is investigating tonight, after a first responder was hit by a vehicle while conducting traffic control for another accident.
Last Sunday, members of the North Shenango Fire Department were responding to a crash near the intersection of Hartstown Road and Fries Road.
According to the department, the road was closed off, but another motorist attempted to go around traffic cones, struck a fire police officer, and left the scene.
"Honestly, that day, it scared me knowing that not only people from our department, but people there could have been injured, could have been hurt," said Meadville Fire Department Chief Evan Kardosh. "They were trying to tend to that patient who was in need and so to have that in the midst of everything is scary."
An ambulance with the Meadville Fire Department then responded and rushed the volunteer to the hospital.
According to the department, that volunteer is now out home recovering.
In the wake of the accident, Chief Kardosh is encouraging drivers to slow down and follow traffic signals and devices when approaching the scene of an accident.
"It's important because there's lives that are there," said Chief Kardosh. "That individual that had been struck was volunteering his time on a weekend to go out there, trying to help the community, and ended up getting a ride to the hospital. I think it's very important that we slow down, and respect the responders that are out there."
The Conneaut Lake Police Department is investigating the incident. As of now, no word on any arrests or if any charges have been filed in this case.
