After weeks of speculation, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is Kamala Harris' VP pick for the democratic ticket.

Erie News Now wanted to know how that choice is playing with delegates to the Democratic National Convention from western Pennsylvania.

We checked in with delegate Chelcie Alcorn, campaign manager for Jim Wertz for PA Senate, and with delegate Gavin Griffin who is a political science major at Mercyhurst University and a Titusville City council member.

Alcorn predicted Walz would be the smart pick. "I think that he provides a good physical contract to Kamala Harris and I think he can speak to a lot of the heartland in the United States that might have a harder time listening to things vice president Harris says," Alcorn said.

While Griffen said he was a bit surprised, but in a good way.  "With Walz as the pick, I think he brings a lot of experience in the federal government as a congressman for 12 years and of course as a governor for six.  I think he appeals very well to working class voters and rural voters. This wasn't a surprising pick necessarily, I think he rounds out the ticket very well, a rural governor from the midwest so I was a little bit surprised but in a good way," Griffen said.

Both delegates believe that Governor Josh Shapiro would have been a good pick to shore up Pennsylvania, one of the major swing states both parties need to win the White House.  "Of course I was hopeful as a proud Pennsylvanian that our governor would be on the ticket, but I'm also very thankful, we get to have him for another hopefully 6 years," Griffen said.

"You know, I think Governor Shapiro would have been a great pick, and would have certainly solidified Pennsylvania for us in November but I think that we have to look at the other blue wall states as well as Georgia and Arizona that might be in play for us," Alcorn said, and think also about winning Wisconsin, and Michigan -- so there's a larger picture here at play than just - can we win Pennsylvania," she added.
