Pennsylvania State Police have completed their crime scene investigation in downtown Erie following an alleged armed carjacking incident at 4 a.m. near 4th St. and State St.

Police exchanged gunfire with a suspect near the CelebrateErie mainstage following the reported carjacking.

The carjacking victim reported the incident to police around 4 a.m., and police spotted the car a short time later, according to a statement from City of Erie Police Department.

The car took off and led police on a chase in downtown Erie before crashing the vehicle into the fencing set up for CelebrateErie, investigators said.

The suspect got out of the vehicle and ran from officers, but he later pulled out a gun and fired at police, who returned fire and hit the suspect, according to police.

Police picked up the suspect and carried him to French St., so the ambulance could take him to UPMC Hamot for treatment, the statement from police said. He is listed in stable condition.

State police were called to handle the investigation as part of protocols for officer-involved shootings.

The CelebrateErie mainstage area between 4th and 5th St. on State St. is closed until state police release the crime scene, according to city officials.

CelebrateErie activities will still begin at 11 a.m. Mainstage shows are not scheduled to start until 5:30 p.m., but organizers are waiting for state police to finish setting up.
