Hundreds of Cows Re-Housed After Dairy Farm Fire in Ashtabula
A massive fire in Ashtabula County left members of a three-generational family farm scrambling to find homes for close to 2,000 cows.
Jerry Comp who runs the family farm in Dorset Township said, "It's still not set in." The farm was home nearly 2,000 cows until Sunday night.
A fire on Sunday tore through the farm, causing Comp and his family to scramble to save the cows. "It's very devastating, trying to decide what to do is a big decision. A lot of decisions made real quick. We have cows all over the place", said Comp.
Dozens of fire companies from around the region came to help extinguish the fire all through the night. As Comp said, "That was very awesome, very nice. They said where all the came from, I didn't hear where they all came from, but very good places."
But they weren't the only ones to lend a helping hand, community members dropped off food and water for first responders and the Comp family. Fellow dairy farmers also stepped up to help house the cows while the Comp family works to figure out the next steps. The farm has been a community staple for the past three generations and family members said although devastating, they are grateful for the support.
As Comp expressed, "It means a lot, very much."
Comp said he believes they only lost five cows in the fire and they are grateful for everyone who has offered to help care for the cows in the coming weeks and months.
